Between the early 16th and late 17th centuries, “Fancies”—fantasias for viol consort—represented one of the glories of English music, numbering in the hundreds. Prior to the advent of the classical string quartet, they stood as the supreme expression of instrumental chamber music. By the time the young Henry Purcell turned his hand to them, the form already belonged to a bygone era, and these “swan songs” are steeped in mystery; presented here is the complete set, alongside other gems. Recorded live in concert May 24, 2026 in the Auditorium of Radio France’s Broadcasting House, Paris.
