Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Kevin Puts’s hit new opera triumphantly returns, as do the original trio of legendary divas—sopranos Renée Fleming and Kelli O’Hara and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.

The season will be the first following the departure of Riccardo Muti as music director. But the maestro will be close at hand as he continues his association with the CSO.

This year’s Grammys, the 65th annual ceremony, takes place on Sunday, February 5.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, music director of the Metropolitan Opera and the Philadelphia Orchestra, is taking a four-week sabbatical from conducting after a busy autumn and ahead of a challenging second half of the season.

COT presents a world-premiere opera, Elizabeth Cree, by the team of composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell, who together created the Pulitzer-winning opera Silent Night.

Mark Campbell has written the words to over fifteen operas to date, making him one of the most active librettists alive. When Campbell visited the Windy City, he spoke about his work and explained, “how do you write an opera?”

Chicago Opera Theater announced its 2017-18 season: three operas, including a world-premiere co-production with Opera Philadelphia, to be staged at the newly-renovated Studebaker Theater in the Fine Arts Building.
