The Newberry Consort has announced a collaboration-rich 2023-2024 season.

The season launches in September, with a program highlighting the music of Sophie Elisabeth. In her day, the 17th century German duchess, artist, and impresario shaped the arts world through compositions and patronage, but her work is now seldom performed in the US.

In December, the ensemble returns with a reworked take on a signature Christmas program. Opening up “A Mexican Christmas” to “A Latin American Christmas,” this broadened program adds selections from Peru, Guatemala, Spain, indigenous cultures, and more.

In March, the ensemble collaborates with Cleveland ensemble Trobár and keyboardist Catalina Vicens to explore the musical tradition of minstrels in Medieval Europe.

And closing out the season, the Newberry Consort joins forces with Incantare — a violin and sackbut ensemble that also features Newberry’s artistic director Liza Malamut — to present music inspired by and evocative of Italian painter Jacopo Tintoretto.

The season will also see the ensemble team up with another Chicago-based early music outfit — from September 29 to October 1, Newberry’s sackbut quartet and other artists will feature in Haymarket Opera’s presentation of Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola d’Alcina.
